Victoria Lamb Blog Tour

Her Last Assassin

Today I am lucky to welcome Victoria Lamb to my blog following the release of her latest book, Her Last Assasin.  I asked Victoria about her writing inspiration for the last book in her Lucy Morgan series:

My new novel from Bantam is HER LAST ASSASSIN, the final book in my Lucy Morgan series, an Elizabethan Court fiction with thriller and romance elements. In this last instalment, Lucy’s affair with William Shakespeare becomes a threat to her status at court, Master Goodluck finally reveals his compelling backstory as an English spy, and a political drama unfolds when an unknown assassin is detected within Elizabeth’s own retinue – forcing the queen to turn to a new spymaster for help.

It’s both exhilarating and frightening to write the final book in a series. There are so many threads to gather together – some that stretch right back to the beginning – ensuring all storylines are satisfactorily concluded, and all questions answered. Without careful planning, the logistics alone can become a nightmare. But this does mean there’s little room for extraneous matter; the final book becomes rich and action-packed, particularly when a writer has four narrative characters to follow, each with their own complex storylines, as I did in this series.

In HER LAST ASSASSIN, Lucy Morgan is my main protagonist, though not always the focus of the action. She begins the story still in love with young playwright Shakespeare, but William is hardly the ideal lover, struggling as he is with new-found fame and the prospect of a noble patron, and her position at court is soon dangerously precarious. Her mistress Queen Elizabeth has to contend with a court of rebellious young noblemen and a war with Spain that may destroy England. To add to that, the spy Master Goodluck uncovers a fresh plot against the queen – but personal tragedy overtakes him before he can deliver the information.

One of my favourite parts of the trilogy takes place in this final book, when we learn Master Goodluck’s true identity. He’s been a shadowy character throughout the trilogy, as befits a player-cum-spy whose aquaintances include theatrical impresario James Burbage and suspected government spy and plyawright Kit Marlowe. But now at last we discover his past, and the dramatic events during Queen Mary’s reign that drove him to become a spy.

It’s always sad to say farewell to a group of characters that have been with a writer through a series of books. They become like old friends, so well-developed in your mind that you know instinctively what they will say and do next. To watch such characters interact on the page is a lovely feeling, rather like being at a family gathering. But of course every story must reach a satisfactory end, and the next project always beckons beyond the final pages, with new storylines, characters, faces and voices to inhabit my head.

I’ve been lucky though, as I also write a Young Adult fiction series – the Tudor Witch Trilogy – that includes the young Elizabeth as a main character. So after bidding farewell to Elizabeth I as a middle-aged queen, I still have her voice in my head as an exiled princess in her sister Mary’s reign. That’s one of the beauties of writing historical fiction. There is always more to say about the ‘real’ people in our past, another facet of their stories waiting to be written …

HER LAST ASSASSIN is published by Bantam on February 27th 2014.

Thank you Victoria for including me in this blog tour. My review will be up on the blog soon.

Dangerous by Tim Warnes

Dangerous!

Appearances can be deceptive in this quirky, funny picture book from award-winning author-illustrator, Tim Warnes (Monty and Milli - The Totally Amazing Magic Trick, I Don't Want to Go to Bed). Children will love this funny story about surprises, labels and a very unlikely friendship. Packed with adjectives, it's fantastic for expanding your child's vocabulary too! Mole loves labelling things, but when he comes across a strange thing, he doesn't know what to call it. It's lumpy and bumpy, and has snippy-snappy teeth. Could it be dangerous? Look out, Mole!

Mole loved to label things, but how could he label something that he didn’t know what it was? How many words could he use to label a crocodile?

This is a great book for young children who are learning the names of things that can be found in gardens, parks or woods as Mole has labelled many such things. However  this book gets even better when he finds something he does not recognise and Mole has many labels to add to this lumpy, bumpy, gargantuan  strange thing!

The story is well written and is perfect for children aged 5+. The number of words used to describe the crocodile is great and would make a fantastic project for reception or key stage one children.

The illustrations throughout the story are good. All simply drawn, the animals (Mole and Crocodile) are friendly, have a cartoony style but look like recognisable animals. They tell the story well and have lots of little detail which children can  spot and name throughout the story.

I received this book from the publishers, Little Tiger Press, in return for an honest review.

Boo! by Tracey Corderoy and Caroline Pedler

Boo!

Hullabaloo the rabbit loves playing boo!But when he jumps out to surprise his friends he causes chaos - Squirrel lands in a puddle...splat!Hedgehog topples over...crash!And poor Timid Mouse bursts into tears!"NO MORE BOOS!" everyone shouts.Whatever will Hullabaloo do? A hilarious book about a very playful rabbit by children's favourite Tracey Corderoy (author of Hubble, Bubble Granny Trouble and The Grunt and The Grouch) this noisy tale is perfect for boisterious, full-of-beans four to six year old children.

Regular readers of my blog will know that Tracey Corderoy is a firm favourite children's author of both myself and my chidlren and I love receiving all of her books to review. They are also so different - lots of adorable, cute and cuddly characters along with the Grunt and the Grouch who are adorable in their own special way!

In her latest book, Boo! is definitely an adorable, cute and cuddly character. An adorable rabbit who loves to surprise his friends by bounding on in with a great big BOO! The story is, as ever, fantastically written, and there is a moral to the story, encouraging young children not to surprise everyone all the time when announcing one's arrival. The pictures are also adorable, each character cute and loveable. I think I like the hedgehogs the best, but it is a difficult decision.

The book would make a fantastic book to share at storytime, although it may get a little noisy at bedtime as I am sure little ones will want to shout 'Boo!' throughout the story. Great for little ones (under 5's) to share with their peers.

Thank you to the publishers, Little Tiger Press, for sending me the book to review in return for an honest review.

Butterfly and the Birthday Surprise (Fairies of Blossom Bakery) by Mandy Archer and Kirsteen Harris-Jones

Fairies of Blossom Bakery: Butterfly and the Birthday Surprise - Cupcake Fairies 4

Butterfly wants everything to be perfect for her perfect birthday party. She's got her dress, her cake and the fairies are helping her with the invites and decoration. But when it rains and everybody has to go home the other fairies help to save the day! A gorgeous series about fairies, friendship and baking!

A series of books about the Blossom Bakery fairies, six fairies who all bake and each have their own favourite bakes. In this instalment, Butterfly is organising the best birthday party ever, however, as is often in life, rain hampers premade plan!

The book begins with a map of Blossom Bakery, a land where all the fairies live. Just looking at the map I want to know more about the land as there is Princess Crystals Royal Palace , along with Goblin Grotto and Dark Wood Cave.  Although the book is a picture story it is more suitable for older children as the story is rather long, with big chunks of story on each page. The pictures all look hand drawn and are great pieces of work - the only thing missing from the illustrations is a little fairy magic glittering! The book ends with a cupcake recipe straight from Blossom Bakery.

This would be a great book for fairy loving cupcake making girls. It would be a great present along with some cake decorating materials to decorate the recipe at the back of the book. As it is part of a series, I am sure lots of little girls will enjoy collecting the whole series. It would also be perfect as a theme for a birthday party.

Thank you to the publishers, Random House Children's Books, for sending me the book to review.

It's just right for rainy days, long journeys or simply as a treat or gift, and there's a delightful puppy story by best-selling author Holly Webb. Plus there are over 400 cute puppy stickers to have fun with long after the reader has finished the puzzles.

Holly Webb is a favourite author in our house, my daughter loves all of her animal books and this is an activity book based around a cute puppy which I am sure is based upon one of Webb's story books.

The first thing I found when I opened the book was a beautiful door hanger to cut out saying "Sssssh Reading in Progress". It is adorable and I am sure it will soon hang on my daughter's door very soon.

There are lots of puzzles inside, including wordsearches; dot to dot pictures; spot the difference and pictures to colour. There are also over 400 stickers, the larger proportion of which include the cute puppies. There is also a story written by Holly Webb included within the book.

This book would be a perfect gift to give to someone who is going on a long journey - only pencils, crayons etc need to be added to make a great boredom buster, or would be great as a rainy day idea.

I think this would be perfect for children aged 7+.

Thank you to the publishers, Little Tiger Press, for sending me this book to review, in exchange for an honest review.
